Question 26

A student is handed an aqueous solution of an unknown transition metal salt Y Y\,Y to identify. They carry out two qualitative tests:

  • Test 1: They add dilute sodium hydroxide solution dropwise to a sample of the solution. A green precipitate forms which remains insoluble when excess sodium hydroxide is added.
  • Test 2: They acidify a second sample of the solution with dilute nitric acid and then add silver nitrate solution. A cream precipitate is observed.

What is the formula of salt YYY?

FeBr3\text{FeBr}_3FeBr3

FeBr2\text{FeBr}_2FeBr2

FeCl2\text{FeCl}_2FeCl2

FeI2\text{FeI}_2FeI2
