There are three common methods of obtaining metals from the Earth's crust:

  • Mine the uncombined, pure native metal
  • Mine the metal ore and heat it with carbon
  • Mine the metal ore and electrolyse the molten ionic compound

The method chosen to extract a metal is directly linked to its position in the reactivity series.

Platinum, sodium, zinc, and lead are four metals with different reactivities.
