Question 10

A student is provided with three unlabelled bottles containing colourless liquids.

The liquids are known to be:

  • pentane, C5H12C_5H_{12}C5H12 (a liquid alkane)
  • pentene, C5H10C_5H_{10}C5H10 (a liquid alkene)
  • propanoic acid, C3H6O2C_3H_6O_2C3H6O2 (a carboxylic acid, in aqueous solution)

Aqueous solutions of carboxylic acids contain hydrogen ions and undergo reactions typical of acids with indicators and carbonates.

Describe, in detail, the chemical tests the student should carry out to identify each of the three liquids.

Your description should include:

  • the name of each test reagent and the observations for each liquid
  • balanced chemical equations for any reactions that occur.
