Question 9

A laboratory technician is given two unlabelled gas cylinders containing hydrocarbon gases, Gas A and Gas B. One cylinder contains propane (C3H8\text{C}_3\text{H}_8C3H8) and the other contains propene (C3H6\text{C}_3\text{H}_6C3H6).

The technician bubbles each gas through a separate test tube containing orange-brown bromine water and records the following observations:

  • Gas A: The bromine water remains orange-brown.
  • Gas B: The bromine water is rapidly decolourised.

Explain these observations, referring to the bonding in propane and propene.
