A student investigated the energy released when ethanol is burned. They used the apparatus shown in the diagram below.

A laboratory setup for calorimetry. A spirit burner containing ethanol sits on a heatproof mat. Above the burner, a copper can containing 100 cm<sup>3</sup> of water is held by a clamp and stand. A thermometer is placed inside the water. The setup has no shielding around the burner, and there is a significant air gap between the flame and the bottom of the copper can.

Suggest two modifications to the apparatus setup that would increase the proportion of heat energy transferred from the burning fuel to the water.
