An analyst is presented with three unlabelled bottles containing aqueous solutions of different sodium halides: sodium chloride, sodium bromide, and sodium iodide. They are also given three unlabelled bottles containing aqueous solutions of different halogens: chlorine, bromine, and iodine.

Describe a systematic procedure the analyst could carry out to identify the contents of each of the six bottles. In your answer, you should:

  • Describe the experimental method.
  • Detail the observations that would be made.
  • Explain how these observations allow the identification of each solution.
  • Deduce the order of reactivity of the halogens from these results, explaining the chemistry involved.
  • Write ionic equations for the reactions that occur.
