Question 15

A student wants to investigate the reaction of potassium with water using the setup shown below.

Diagram showing a large piece of potassium being dropped into an open glass trough of water, with a person standing directly over the trough looking down.

They plan to use the following method:

  • Step 1: Fill a large glass trough half-full with water.
  • Step 2: Cut a large slice of potassium (about 1 cm3) and use tweezers to drop it directly into the water.
  • Step 3: Stand directly over the trough to observe the flame and intensity of the reaction.

A teacher says that this method is not safe because the reaction is too vigorous. Explain changes that should be made to Step 2 and Step 3 to make the experiment safer.
