Group 1 elements (alkali metals) react vigorously with water to produce an alkaline metal hydroxide solution and flammable hydrogen gas.

A student plans the following method to demonstrate this reaction with lithium.

Step 1: Pour 150 cm3 of distilled water into the container shown in Figure 1. Step 2: Use forceps to add a small, pea-sized piece of lithium to the water in the container. Step 3: Cover the mouth of the container with a watch glass to contain any spitting. Step 4: Add a few drops of phenolphthalein indicator to the resulting solution.
