The elements in Group 1 react vigorously with water. To demonstrate the trend in reactivity safely, a teacher proposes the following method to investigate the reaction of sodium with water:

  • Step 1: Position a safety screen between the demonstration area and the class.
  • Step 2: Use tweezers to remove a small, pea-sized piece of sodium metal from its storage oil and dry it on filter paper.
  • Step 3: Three-quarters fill the large, wide-mouthed container shown in Figure 1 with water.
  • Step 4: Carefully drop the sodium piece onto the water surface using tweezers and record your observations.
