The elements in Group 1 react vigorously with water. A student suggests the following method to investigate the reaction of lithium with water:

  • Step 1: Put on safety goggles.
  • Step 2: Cut a large 1.5 cm×1.5 cm×1.5 cm1.5\text{ cm} \times 1.5\text{ cm} \times 1.5\text{ cm}1.5 cm×1.5 cm×1.5 cm piece of lithium metal.
  • Step 3: Half-fill the container shown in Figure 1 with water.
  • Step 4: Carefully drop the lithium piece into the water and record your observations.
