An investigator prepared three cylinders of carrot and recorded the initial mass of each.
The cylinders were immersed in 40 cm3 of a 0.5 mol/dm3 sodium chloride solution.
After 90 minutes, the investigator removed the cylinders, gently blotted them dry, and recorded their final mass. The results are shown in the table below.
| Carrot cylinder | Initial mass / g | Final mass / g | Change in mass / g |
|---|---|---|---|
| X | 4.2 | 3.6 | -0.6 |
| Y | 4.5 | 3.8 | -0.7 |
| Z | 4.1 | 3.5 | -0.6 |
State one reason why the investigator used three carrot cylinders rather than a single cylinder.
