A student investigated osmosis in turnip cores using the following method:

  • Use a cork borer to cut cores from a turnip, ensuring they have the same diameter, and cut them to a length of 3.5 cm.
  • Record the initial mass of each turnip core.
  • Place each core into a boiling tube containing 40 cm3 of a different concentration of glucose solution.
  • Leave the cores submerged for 50 minutes.
  • Remove each core, blot with filter paper to remove excess surface liquid, and record the final mass.

State one variable, other than the dimensions of the turnip cores, the volume of the solution, or the immersion time, that must be controlled in this investigation to ensure valid results.
