A student was investigating osmosis in sweet potato cylinders.

They used the following method:

  • Use a cork borer to cut sweet potato into cylinders of equal length and diameter.
  • Record the initial mass of each cylinder.
  • Place each cylinder into a boiling tube containing a different concentration of sucrose solution.
  • Leave the cylinders in the solution for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the cylinders, gently pat them dry with a paper towel, and record the final mass of each cylinder.
