Figure 1 shows the mean blood oestrogen concentration in women aged 35 to 55.

The curve shows a steady value of approximately 500 pmol/L from age 35 to 43, followed by a steep decline from age 44 down to approximately 50 pmol/L by age 48, where it levels off at this low concentration up to age 55.

Use information from Figure 1 to explain why women over the age of 48 are less likely to ovulate.
