It’s usually because past papers are being used like a scoreboard instead of a training plan. If you remember nothing else, remember this loop:

  • Attempt under realistic conditions
  • Mark using the mark scheme (honestly)

AQA GCSE Physics papers reward a very specific kind of thinking: clear steps, correct units, and a method that an examiner can follow. That is basically GCSE maths discipline wearing a lab coat.

How to run a past paper session like an athlete

Choose the right paper at the right time

Past papers work best when they’re used in phases:

  • Early phase (learning): pick sections by topic, not full papers.
  • Middle phase (linking): full papers, but stop to note weak spots.
  • Late phase (performance): full papers under exam timing, then brutal review.

Worked examples: the maths that wins physics marks

Rearranging a formula (and not panicking)

A classic AQA GCSE Physics structure is: use the equation, substitute values, rearrange, include units.

Suppose a question uses v=stv = \frac{s}{t}v=ts​ and gives s=180 ms = 180\,\text{m}s=180m, v=12 m s−1v = 12\,\text{m s}^{-1}v=12m s−1. Find ttt.

Start with:

v=st v = \frac{s}{t} v=ts​

Multiply both sides by ttt:

vt=s vt = s vt=s

Divide both sides by vvv:

t=sv t = \frac{s}{v} t=vs​

Substitute:

t=18012=15 t = \frac{180}{12} = 15 t=12180​=15

So t=15 st = 15\,\text{s}t=15s.

GCSE habit that saves marks: write the rearranged formula before substituting. It reduces substitution mistakes and shows method marks.

Standard form and prefixes (where easy marks disappear)

Suppose a value is 0.00047 m0.00047\,\text{m}0.00047m. Write it in standard form.

Move the decimal 444 places to the right to get 4.74.74.7, so:

0.00047=4.7×10−4 0.00047 = 4.7 \times 10^{-4} 0.00047=4.7×10−4

Now link it to prefixes (common in AQA GCSE Physics):

  • 1 mm=10−3 m1\,\text{mm} = 10^{-3}\,\text{m}1mm=10−3m

So converting 0.00047 m0.00047\,\text{m}0.00047m into mm:

0.00047 m=0.00047÷10−3 mm=0.47 mm 0.00047\,\text{m} = 0.00047 \div 10^{-3}\,\text{mm} = 0.47\,\text{mm} 0.00047m=0.00047÷10−3mm=0.47mm

A fast check: mm are smaller than m, so the number should get bigger. 0.470.470.47 is bigger than 0.000470.000470.00047. Good.

Gradient on a graph (rate questions)

AQA GCSE Physics loves “determine the gradient” because it tests method, not memory.

If two clear points on a line are (2,6)(2, 6)(2,6) and (8,18)(8, 18)(8,18), then:

gradient=ΔyΔx=18−68−2=126=2 \text{gradient} = \frac{\Delta y}{\Delta x} = \frac{18 - 6}{8 - 2} = \frac{12}{6} = 2 gradient=ΔxΔy​=8−218−6​=612​=2

So the gradient is 222 (with units depending on the axes). In physics, the units are often where the marks are hiding.

GCSE habit that saves marks: use a large triangle and write the subtraction carefully. Most gradient errors are sign errors or picking points that aren’t on the line.

How to review a paper so it actually changes your next score

The review is where the real GCSE improvement happens. Use this three-layer method.

Layer 1: Mark losses

Sort each lost mark into one bucket:

  • Knowledge gap (didn’t know the idea)
  • Method gap (knew idea, couldn’t execute)
  • Exam technique (units, rounding, missed command word)

Layer 2: Build mini-drills

Turn each bucket into a 10-minute fix:

  • Knowledge gap: revise the lesson and redo 3 similar questions.
  • Method gap: practise the maths skill (algebra, graphs, standard form).
  • Technique: write a personal checklist (units, sig figs, show working).
