Prosocial drive refers to an individual's intrinsic motivation to help others and engage in cooperative behaviors. A psychologist wanted to investigate this using a sample of 30 volunteers from a local community center.
In the first part of the study, the psychologist used a newly designed 20-item self-report questionnaire to measure prosocial drive. The maximum possible score was 80. The lowest score in her sample was 25, and the highest score was 72.
In the second part of the study, the participants were observed in a staged waiting room scenario where they had various opportunities to assist a confederate (actor) who dropped a box of paperwork. The helper trials were scored out of a maximum of 10 points.
