Distraction Experiment Scenario

Research findings suggest that background auditory distraction can impair cognitive reading performance. To test this, an experiment was conducted under two different environmental conditions:

  • Condition 1: 25 participants read a dense scientific passage and completed a comprehension quiz in a completely quiet room.
  • Condition 2: The same 25 participants read an equivalent scientific passage and completed a comprehension quiz while loud, high-frequency white noise was played through headphones.

The experiment used a repeated measures design, was fully counterbalanced, and both sessions were completed in a single afternoon.

The participants were fully debriefed immediately after taking part in the study.
