Question 212

Social Anxiety Intervention Study

A researcher set up a study to test the effectiveness of different therapeutic interventions for adolescent social anxiety.

Thirty teenagers, all diagnosed with social anxiety disorder, participated in the study. At the start of the study, the researcher recorded each participant's anxiety level using a standardized self-report scale.

The 30 participants were then randomly allocated to three equal groups of 10.

  • Group A completed an 8-week course of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
  • Group B completed an 8-week course of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).
  • Group C was placed on a waiting list and received no intervention.

At the end of the 8-week period, the researcher reassessed each participant's social anxiety levels. The results showed that the average anxiety scores for Group A and Group B had decreased significantly, whereas the average scores for Group C remained unchanged.

Question: Explain the purpose of Group C within this study.
