Context / Scenario

A researcher conducted a lab experiment to investigate the effect of different processing levels on memory recall.

  • Participants in Group A processed a list of 15 words acoustically (by deciding whether each word rhymed with a target word).
  • Participants in Group B processed the same list of 15 words semantically (by deciding whether each word fitted into a specific category).

Both groups were then given an unexpected free recall test of the 15 words. The researcher found that participants in Group B recalled significantly more words than those in Group A.
