Question 8

Scenario: Toby and Maya

Two parents are talking about how their toddlers, Toby and Maya, identify animals.

  • Toby's dad says: 'Toby knows what our pet dog looks like. But yesterday, when we saw a neighbor's cat, he pointed at it and shouted "Doggy!" He seems to think any small four-legged furry animal is a dog.'
  • Maya's mum says: 'Maya used to do exactly the same thing, but now she knows the difference between dogs and cats, and how they behave differently. She knows that dogs bark and chase balls, while cats meow and climb fences, so she uses the right name for each.'

Referring to the comments about Toby and Maya, outline Piaget's theory about schema development.
