Study of Occupational Sex-Role Stereotypes

In a study investigating sex-role stereotypes and occupational choices, a psychology student observed a sample of 6-year-old children. Each child watched two short video clips:

  • Video A showed actors performing traditional gender-stereotypical occupations (e.g., a male car mechanic and a female primary school teacher).
  • Video B showed actors performing non-traditional, non-gender-stereotypical occupations (e.g., a female car mechanic and a male primary school teacher).

The children were asked to rate how suitable they thought the jobs were for the actors in the videos, using a scale of 1 (not at all suitable) to 5 (extremely suitable).

The student planned to conduct a Wilcoxon signed-ranks test to analyze the ratings and determine if there was a statistically significant difference between the children's perceptions of the traditional and non-traditional occupations.
