Occupational psychologists conducted a study with 250 emergency medical technicians (EMTs) to investigate the relationship between gender identity and work-related psychological outcomes. Each participant completed the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) to determine their gender role identity (masculine, feminine, androgynous, or undifferentiated). They also completed standardized scales measuring clinical burnout risk and adaptive decision-making speed under pressure.
The researchers found that EMTs classified as androgynous scored significantly lower on burnout risk and displayed faster adaptive decision-making than those classified as undifferentiated, and slightly better overall outcomes than those classified as having traditionally gender-typed (masculine or feminine) roles.
