Researchers wanted to investigate the emotional framing and demands of young environmental campaigners. They gathered a sample of 80 public speech transcripts from climate rallies worldwide, delivered by activists aged 13–18. They ensured a balanced sample of speeches from both high-income and low-income nations.
Before conducting the analysis, they developed a coding system to analyse the speech transcripts. The categories included: references to systemic political failure, appeals to individual lifestyle changes, and expressions of ecological anxiety versus collective hope.
