Researchers investigated communication patterns in high-stress operational environments. They obtained official transcribed radio transmissions from 45 commercial flights that recorded a "near-miss" or "loss of separation" event. These transcripts captured all verbal exchanges between the flight crew and air traffic controllers in the 10 minutes preceding each incident.
The material consisted of transcripts from three different international aviation safety databases, with 15 incidents selected from each database.
Before starting their analysis, the research team established a structured coding scheme with predefined categories, including: 'use of non-standard aviation phraseology', 'interrupted read-backs', and 'expression of physical fatigue'.
