Question 2

An environmental psychologist wanted to investigate how residents in a suburban community experience the transition to a car-free neighbourhood scheme. She decided to conduct semi-structured interviews with a sample of residents from various streets. The goal was to allow residents to speak openly and in depth about their daily mobility adjustments.

Two of the questions she asked were:

  • 'Describe the most challenging aspects of transitioning from relying on a personal vehicle to using active travel or public transport.'
  • 'Tell me about any community initiatives or local resources that have been particularly helpful in supporting this transition.'

Explain how the researcher could use thematic analysis to analyse the qualitative data collected from these interviews.
