The Yorkshire Youth Sleep Study

Researchers were interested in teenagers' sleep hygiene and habits. They asked participants to keep a detailed weekly written sleep diary. In their diaries, the teenagers were asked to describe their bedtime routines, their screen use in the hour before sleep, and how rested they felt the next morning.

There were 60 participants in the study: twenty teenagers aged 15–16 years recruited from each of three different secondary schools in the Yorkshire area. There were equal numbers of male and female participants.

Before analyzing the diaries, the researchers developed a coding system with specific categories, including: 'screen-free wind-down time', 'caffeine consumption after 6 PM', and 'night-time awakenings'.
