Question 44

A flat rectangular coil entering and rotating in a uniform magnetic field

As shown in the diagram, a flat rectangular coil of 50 turns with dimensions 60 mm60\text{ mm}60 mm by 40 mm40\text{ mm}40 mm is moved at a uniform speed from Position 1 to Position 2. While the coil is entering the uniform magnetic field of 0.35 T0.35\text{ T}0.35 T, the oscilloscope records an average induced electromotive force (emf) of 0.28 V0.28\text{ V}0.28 V.

1.

State Lenz’s law.

[1]
a.

Calculate the time, ttt, taken for the coil to move completely into the magnetic field from Position 1 to Position 2.

[3]
b.

The coil is now rotated at a constant angular speed about the vertical axis of rotation shown in the diagram. Calculate the angular speed of the coil when the maximum reading on the oscilloscope is 2.1 V2.1\text{ V}2.1 V.
