Question 66

A beam of singly-charged magnesium ions containing the isotopes 24Mg+^{24}\text{Mg}^{+}24Mg+ and 26Mg+^{26}\text{Mg}^{+}26Mg+ is accelerated from rest through a constant potential difference VVV. The ions then enter a region of uniform magnetic field of flux density B B\,B acting perpendicular to their direction of motion, where they travel in circular paths of radii r24r_{24}r24 and r26r_{26}r26 respectively.

Show that the ratio of the path radii r26r24\displaystyle \frac{r_{26}}{r_{24}}r24r26 is independent of both V V\,V and BBB, and determine the numerical value of this ratio.

Assume the masses of the isotopes are 24 u24\text{ u}24 u and 26 u26\text{ u}26 u respectively.
