Extract A: Consumer Behaviour in the Digital Fitness App Market

Over the last few years, digital health and fitness platforms have adopted sophisticated methods to capture and retain customer attention. Applications such as FitPulse, ZoneFit, and RunTracker make extensive use of 'nudges' to steer consumer behaviour. The 'daily streak' notification on FitPulse and the automatic weekly challenge enrollment on RunTracker have been linked by behavioural scientists to compulsive usage patterns, where users feel psychological pressure to maintain a streak rather than exercising based on actual physical need or utility.

Similarly, the standard industry practice of offering a '14-day premium free trial' requires users to input their credit card information upfront. This relies on consumer inertia and the default effect, turning forgetful trial users into active, paying subscribers. Leveraging these behavioural biases, FitPulse expanded its global footprint rapidly, generating total revenues of over £850 million in 2021, a significant increase from £590 million the previous year.

However, data from 2023 indicates that consumers, increasingly squeezed by rising inflation and energy bills, are actively reviewing their non-essential outbounds. FitPulse reported a loss of over 150,000 active subscriptions in the first quarter of the year, with a further 500,000 forecast to leave by winter. Subscribers are explicitly rethinking their financial commitments to digital subscriptions that they accumulated during the stay-at-home periods of the pandemic. Many former FitPulse users cited a lack of actual app usage, diminishing satisfaction with updated features, and poor perceived value for money as their primary reasons for cancelling.

Meanwhile, rival platform ZoneFit has seen high customer retention after introducing transparent pricing and higher-quality localized workout plans. Projected churn rates for ZoneFit fell to a record low of 2.5% as users migrated their spending to platforms offering better utility per pound spent.

With reference to the information provided in Extract A, assess whether subscribers to digital fitness apps like FitPulse behave rationally.
