Question 22

Magnetic field lines show the shape and direction of a magnetic field.

a.

The diagram shows a cross-section through a wire placed between two magnetic poles. The wire carries electric current out of the page at Y\mathbf{Y}Y. The shape of the magnetic field is shown.

A wire cross-section labeled Y with a dot in the center, representing current flowing out of the page. The wire is positioned vertically between a South (S) pole on the top and a North (N) pole on the bottom. The magnetic field lines are shown. On the right side of the wire, the field lines are closely spaced and curve outwards to the right. On the left side of the wire, the field lines are much further apart and bend slightly around the left side of the wire, creating a region of weaker field to the left.

(i) State the direction of the magnetic field lines in this diagram (including the direction from pole to pole and the direction of the loops around the wire).

(ii) Determine the direction of the electromagnetic force acting on the wire.

[3]
b.

The wire is removed and the magnetic field between the poles changes. Describe the shape, spacing, and direction of the new magnetic field lines between the South pole (top) and North pole (bottom).

[3]
c.

Describe a procedure to map the shape and direction of the magnetic field lines around a bar magnet using a single plotting compass.
