Question 19

The bin behind the hedge

An original imagined speech about a proposed layout for a community garden.

Our plan puts the litter bin behind the hedge, where it will not spoil the photograph of the entrance. Before we approve that small triumph, I would like us to imagine arriving with an empty cup.

You have found the bench. You have found the flowers. You have found a sign explaining why this garden belongs to everybody. The one thing you cannot find is somewhere to put the cup without carrying it home. The camera, meanwhile, is having a wonderful visit.

A garden should be beautiful. I have spent enough afternoons arguing with the bare patch beside the gate to believe that. But beauty is being asked to do an odd kind of work if every practical object must disappear before we can recognise it. People bring hands, bags and ordinary needs into a place, even when the picture leaves them out.

Let us choose a position which is easy to see and reach, with room for the bin to be emptied. We can consider its appearance too. Those are decisions about making something work in the garden, rather than hiding the evidence that anybody uses it.

Imagine next year's photograph. I would like it to contain flowers, a comfortable bench and somebody enjoying being here. If a bin appears at the edge, we may have to accept a shocking truth: the garden has become useful.

Examine the methods the speaker uses to persuade listeners to reconsider the bin’s proposed position.
