The bags beside the bottle bank

An original literary non-fiction-style account of taking empty glass containers to a neighbourhood collection point.

I carried the jars in a cloth bag which had once announced that small changes made a big difference. The slogan was currently hidden by a stain shaped like a continent. At every step, the jars argued with one another. I held the bag away from my knee and tried to look like a person whose good intentions were entirely convenient.

At the collection point, two other people were already waiting. One had separated bottles into three neat boxes. The other carried a single jar inside an enormous shopping bag. We greeted one another with the brief seriousness of people about to complete a modest public duty. Then the person with the boxes dropped a lid, and all three of us bent to pick it up.

I opened my bag. Labels from different breakfasts looked back at me, some carefully washed, others still holding a pale trace of what they had contained. The jars were not an abstract problem now. They were the repeated small decisions of my own week, with enough weight between them to make my arm ache.

The first jar disappeared through the opening. A hard chime came from inside, followed by a lower, muddled crash. The sound was less elegant than the word recycling. When the bag was empty, I folded it with the stain on the outside. It was lighter, but it had not become an advertisement again. On the walk home, I stopped trying to hide the continent.

How does the writer use language to present the gap between an ideal of responsible action and its ordinary reality?
