Question 55

The hurried minutes

At the community meeting, members took whichever seats were free, and no name cards had been provided. Two visitors joined the discussion before the chair introduced them, so I could not match their names to their comments. Several people referred to agreements made 'last month', although I had not attended that meeting and had not seen its minutes. Without warning, the discussion moved from repairs to parking and then returned to repairs, leaving my notes in the wrong order. Whenever an argument began, speakers interrupted one another and I could not separate their contributions. Finally, the wording of a proposal was altered repeatedly while I was writing it down, making me uncertain which version should appear in the record.

Describe the difficulties the writer faces when producing an accurate record of the meeting. You may support your points with brief quotations.
