A seat at lunch
On my first lunchtime at the school, Maya waved me towards the chair beside her. I recognised her from our science lesson and was pleased that I might not have to eat alone. As I approached, her friends stopped talking and looked at me. I began to wonder whether they wanted someone new at their table. Then Maya moved her bag, introduced me to everyone and asked what I thought of the morning's lessons. Her easy welcome made my anxiety fade.
In your own words, explain the writer's thoughts and feelings about joining Maya's table.
