Inspecting the riverbank
The bank was eroded, with fresh earth visible beneath the grass. The path above it was unstable near the edge, so the surveyor asked us to remain behind the barrier. From further away, the line of grass had looked continuous. Standing where we were allowed to stand, I could finally see the hollow underneath. A familiar-looking surface had concealed a change that mattered to everyone using the route.
From the passage, select two words or phrases that describe signs that the riverbank and path needed caution.
