The decision after the replay
Original opinion extract, written for practice.
For years I demanded that the officials get the important decisions right. Now they spend several minutes examining a replay, and I demand that they get on with the game. I can hear the contradiction. What I cannot recover is the instant after a goal when celebration used to belong entirely to the people who had seen it. Today we cheer with a little question mark attached. I am not arguing that a wrong result becomes fair because it arrives quickly. Nor do I miss every argument shouted on the walk home. I want the review to correct clear errors without turning each close movement into a lesson in geometry. Perhaps that boundary is harder to draw than my complaint allows. It still seems a boundary worth discussing.
