Question 8

A teacher demonstrates, in a fume cupboard, two experiments to show the movement of particles.

a.

In the first experiment, she places some red-brown bromine vapor at the bottom of a gas jar. She then places another gas jar containing colorless nitrogen gas on top of it, as shown in the diagram.

Two gas diffusion experiments: stacked jars with bromine vapor and nitrogen, and a glass tube with cotton wool at each end.

Choose two statements that are correct about this experiment:

  • A All the nitrogen molecules in the upper gas jar remain there.
  • B Bromine and nitrogen chemically react to form a liquid.
  • C Bromine vapor has a darker color than nitrogen gas.
  • D Bromine vapor diffuses upwards.
  • E Bromine vapor condenses to a solid during the experiment.
  • F The concentration of bromine vapor in the lower gas jar remains completely unchanged throughout the experiment.

b.

In the second experiment, she soaks two pieces of cotton wool in different liquids and places them at opposite ends of a glass tube. She immediately seals the tube with bungs.

During the experiment, a white ring of ammonium chloride appears in the tube.
