Question 71

The morning after the frost

Text: an original contemporary report-style practice extract.

A sharp frost reached the community orchard during the night. When volunteers arrived the next morning, petals on the earliest apple blossom had turned brown and the tips of several young shoots were drooping. The volunteers marked the affected trees but waited for the orchard manager before removing anything.

A notice beside the entrance explained why some branches had been labelled with coloured tape. Visitors were asked not to touch them because the orchard team wanted to observe the trees over the following weeks.

From the opening paragraph, identify two effects of the frost on the trees.
