Captioning the festival
Text: an original contemporary report-style practice extract.
The film festival introduced live captions for its opening discussion. Viewers could follow the speakers on a screen above the stage or open the captions on their own phones. A printed programme was still available, but it contained only the running order. The captioner worked from a desk beside the sound engineer, listening through headphones as the guests spoke.
Organisers had tested the system in an empty hall. Once the audience arrived, laughter sometimes covered the start of a sentence. The captioner asked the chair to pause briefly after each question. That small adjustment mattered more than the larger screen installed that morning.
From the opening paragraph, identify two ways viewers could access the live captions.
