A first shift at the repair café

Text: an original contemporary personal account-style practice extract.

Before the repair café opened, the coordinator described two roles for new volunteers. One person could work at reception, recording what was wrong with each item, while another sorted donated spare parts in the storeroom. I took the reception role. Although I knew little about repairs, asking owners when a fault appeared gave the technicians useful details. When a volunteer collected a lamp from my desk, she thanked me for noting that its switch failed only after several minutes.

From the extract, identify the role the writer chose at the repair café.
