Steel boat hulls are often protected from rusting by attaching blocks of zinc, known as sacrificial anodes, to the hull.

Even when the steel hull is in direct contact with salty seawater, the steel does not rust as long as it is near a zinc block.

Explain why the exposed steel (iron) does not rust.
