In carbonated soft drinks, dissolved carbon dioxide reacts with water to form carbonic acid:

carbon dioxide+water⇌carbonic acid \text{carbon dioxide} + \text{water} \rightleftharpoons \text{carbonic acid} carbon dioxide+water⇌carbonic acid

The symbol ⇌ \rightleftharpoons\,⇌ indicates that carbonic acid can decompose back into carbon dioxide and water at the same time as the forward reaction occurs.
