A student carried out a titration to find the exact concentration of a calcium hydroxide (limewater) solution by neutralizing it with standard hydrochloric acid.

The steps of the titration method are shown below, but they are not in the correct order.

  • step A: transfer the measured calcium hydroxide solution into a clean conical flask and add a few drops of methyl orange indicator
  • step B: record the final reading on the burette and calculate the volume of standard hydrochloric acid added
  • step C: use a volumetric pipette to measure 25.0 cm3 of the calcium hydroxide solution
  • step D: fill a burette with the standard hydrochloric acid and record the initial reading
  • step E: run the standard hydrochloric acid from the burette into the conical flask, swirling continuously, until the indicator changes colour
