A student plans to demonstrate the reaction of potassium with water using the setup shown below.

Unsafe setup for potassium and water reaction

They plan to use the following method:

  • Step 1: Use bare hands to pick up a large 2 cm3 cube of potassium from the storage oil and drop it directly into a glass trough half-filled with water.
  • Step 2: Stand directly behind a safety screen but peer closely over the top of the open trough to observe the flame and intensity of the reaction.

A teacher states that this method is extremely dangerous because potassium is highly reactive.

Explain the changes that should be made to Step 1 and Step 2 to make the experiment safe.
