Question 58

During a laboratory demonstration, a sample of dilute sodium sulfate solution, Na2SO4(aq)\text{Na}_2\text{SO}_4(\text{aq})Na2SO4(aq), was subjected to electrolysis using inert platinum electrodes.

A colourless gas was observed bubbling rapidly at the positive electrode (anode).

When a glowing wooden splint was held near the mouth of the tube collecting this gas, the splint burst back into flame.

Identify the chemical name or formula of the gas that was produced at the anode.
