Auxin cannot pass through thin sheets of a mineral called mica.

A student set up three shoots, P, Q and R. All three shoots received light from the right-hand side only.

  • Shoot P had a mica sheet pushed vertically down through the centre of the tip, separating the left half from the right half.
  • Shoot Q had a mica sheet pushed horizontally into the left-hand (shaded) side, just below the tip.
  • Shoot R had no mica sheet.

After two days, shoot R had bent towards the light. Shoots P and Q had not bent towards the light.
