A student grew a shoot with light coming from its right-hand side. After two days the shoot had bent towards the light.
The student measured the length of cells from the left side and the right side of the shoot, just below the tip.
The Table shows the results.
Table
| Side of the shoot | Mean cell length in μm\mu\text{m}μm |
|---|---|
| right side (facing the light) | 40 |
| left side (shaded) | 64 |
Calculate the percentage by which the cells on the shaded side are longer than the cells on the side facing the light.
Explain the difference in cell length between the two sides of the shoot.
Another student wrote:
"The shoot bends because cells on the shaded side divide more than cells on the side facing the light."
Explain why the results in the Table do not support this statement.
