In waterlogged agricultural soils, the concentration of oxygen is very low, creating anaerobic conditions.

Under these conditions, certain species of bacteria convert dissolved nitrates (NO3−\text{NO}_3^-NO3−​) in the soil into nitrogen gas (N2\text{N}_2N2​), which escapes into the atmosphere. This process reduces soil fertility.
