Question 1

A farmer compares the soil chemistry of two different fields:

  • Field A is well-aerated and contains a cover crop of clover (a leguminous plant).
  • Field B is waterlogged, compacted, and contains a large amount of dead plant matter but no leguminous plants.

Chemical analysis reveals that Field A is rich in nitrates, whereas Field B is deficient in nitrates but contains high levels of ammonium ions and nitrogen gas.

Explain these differences by describing the roles of the different groups of bacteria involved in the nitrogen cycle within these two fields.
