Question 4

An investigation was conducted to study the effect of catalase concentration on the rate of hydrogen peroxide decomposition. Filter paper discs were soaked in different concentrations of catalase and placed at the bottom of a beaker containing a fixed concentration of hydrogen peroxide solution. The oxygen gas produced by the reaction became trapped in the discs, causing them to float to the surface. The time taken for each disc to rise was recorded.

The results of the investigation are shown in the table below. The rate of reaction was calculated using 1time taken (s)\displaystyle \frac{1}{\text{time taken (s)}}time taken (s)1.

Catalase concentration (%)Time taken for disc to rise (s)Rate of reaction (s−1^{-1}−1)
2.01200.008
4.0600.017
6.0400.025
8.0300.033

State and explain a conclusion based on these results.
